Interview with Long Island Doula, Jillian from Zen Doula

If you're pregnant and thinking about your birthing plan, you've probably heard of doulas. A doula is a non-medical support to pregnant women and their families before, during and after childbirth. This support helps the family handle physical, emotional and practical issues around childbirth. Best of all, they are your advocate at a time when you may be really vulnerable. And, if it's your first birth, they give an experienced pair of hands to the entire process.

Jillian at Zen Doula operates out of Millers Place and has connections with many hospitals across Long Island. She stopped by Gold Coast Photography to talk more about doulas, being a doula on Long Island and why a doula is so important to a pregnant woman's experience.

  • How did you decide to become a doula and what do you love about it?

  • When is the best time to choose a doula?

  • How do you choose a doula?

  • What are the 3 most important things that help you decide if a client is right for you (or a doula is a good fit)?

  • What's one thing you wish people asked you before using your services?

  • If you've already given birth, is a doula still a good idea for you?

  • How can a doula improve your birthing experience?

  • What hospitals do you work with?

  • Do you take insurance?

  • What is the typical cost of a doula?

  • What's the best way for others to contact you about your services?

It's been so great getting to know other professionals who support women during one of the most life-changing experiences you can undertake. One of the best parts about my job is how I get to support women through their pregnancy and newborn experiences from behind a camera. Jillian has a much more up close and personal relationship but how amazing that there's a tremendous network of women supporting women across Long Island.

A big thank you to Jillian for her time and please check her out at Zen Doula!
